Sebastian's beloved Riverview Park is in line for a serious refresh. The city is moving ahead with upgrades to the playground, splash pad and surrounding amenities, backed by two grants totaling about $3.2 million.
Phase I is the meat of it: overflow parking, access upgrades, the playground and splash pad, plus new pavilions, utilities and landscaping. Site surveys were slated for early 2026, with design and permitting running roughly January through September. The Florida Inland Navigation District is handling design and permitting on the first piece.
Where exactly things land is still being debated, and it's a real debate. One concept, Concept B, would close Harrison Street and move the splash pad to the north side of it, potentially relocating the playground closer so families with young kids aren't crossing back and forth. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board had recommended a different option, but at the council session most public speakers pushed for Concept B, citing safety for little ones.
The city is keeping residents in the loop on purpose. A public workshop is set for June 2026 to gather feedback on Phase I and possible Phase II elements, with design updates expected in July. If you have opinions about how your kids' splash pad should be laid out, that's your window.
Phase II planning, covering the amphitheater and Twin Piers area, is penciled in for September 2026 through early 2027, and could add volleyball courts, more on-street parking, pier improvements, expanded sidewalks and landscaping. Bidding on Phase I would run late 2026, with construction stretching from spring 2027 into 2028.
For the 772, Riverview Park is one of Sebastian's signature spots, the heart of a lot of festivals and family days. A $3.2 million grant-funded upgrade is a big deal for a small city, and the fact that the splash pad's final home is still up for community input means locals genuinely get a say.
